Septic to Distributed Sewer Conversion Program

The City of Apopka is pleased to announce a new program to help protect and restore our iconic springs. In collaboration with the St. Johns River Water Management District, Apopka has obtained funding assistance to replace septic tanks with a new treatment technology called Distributed Sewer. The service is equivalent to sewer treatment but doesn't require a piped connection to a central treatment plant. Instead, the treatment is provided inside the unit and the fully treated water is safely discharged underground. This technology has been rigorously tested right here in Central Florida, and the treatment units are manufactured in Florida.​


Interested homeowners who sign up for this program can have their existing septic tank removed and replaced with a new treatment unit by the City. Once installed, the treatment unit will be serviced and maintained by the City. There will be a monthly sewer bill of about $45, but there are no other costs or responsibilities for the homeowner.

 

The program is currently open to residents within the Wekiva Glen subdivision. Interested homeowners who sign up for this program can have their existing septic tank removed and replaced with a new treatment unit by the City.

 

What is Distributed Sewer?

Distributed Sewer is a new method of providing sewer treatment to homeowners anywhere, regardless of location, and without the need to connect the home to a central plant through pipes.

How does it work?

A miniature wastewater treatment unit is installed underground at a residence to provide sewer service. The unit is about the same size as a regular septic tank, but that’s where the similarities end! A small but powerful computer and network interface mounts to the side of the house, like an electric meter. The computer allows the utility to monitor and operate the treatment unit from a remote location.

How much will it cost?

The average Distributed Sewer connection cost ranges from $10,000 to $12,000 based on individual site conditions. However, thanks to a cost-share program provided by the St. John’s River Water Management District, funding assistance is available to cover most or all connection fees. The utility will determine any out-of-pocket costs to the homeowner prior to connecting the system.

Do I have to maintain anything?

Once a homeowner is connected to the treatment system, a standard monthly sewer bill from the utility covers all operating and maintenance costs associated with the system, just like every other sewer system. There’s nothing else for the homeowner to do! As long as the homeowner does not damage any of the installed equipment, the system has no additional limitations and can process the same wastes as a central sewer plant. Just like a septic tank or a sewer plant, flushing strong chemicals or non-biodegradable items can damage the equipment or the environment.

What advantages does Distributed Sewer off the homeowner?

Being a utility customer offers many advantages. There will never be a need to schedule septic tank inspections or pump-outs. There will never be a need to pay for a new drainfield, and there is no worry that the toilet won’t flush following rain events or during power outages. The sewer utility bill covers all costs associated with the treatment unit, and home resale values are often higher when utility services are included. Finally, there is the satisfaction of knowing you are part of the solution to reduce pollution and help protect our springs and waterways.

What advantages does Distributed Sewer offer the community?

Distributed Sewer systems do not require a network of pipes and pumps to connect homes to central sewer plants. This means no major construction impacts to neighborhoods, trees, yards and streets.
